“You are a function of what the whole universe is doing in the same way that a wave is a function of what the whole ocean is doing.”
― Alan W. Watts
Good morning! It’s a cold and windy one here in Yonago, Japan. The wind is whistling through the tiny gaps in the windows as I type this. I have a kettle on top of the kerosene heater releasing a little steam into the room. This helps to counter the dryness of the air as well as offering the opportunity to make another pot of tea. Mmm…. tea:)
I am trying to distract myself with some words of wisdom from Alan Watts. This quote is taken from a list of many that can be found on Goodreads. I like to read this one when I am feeling a bit insignificant. It is a wonderful metaphor which I think helps remind us of how we are all connected, how we are one part of an enormous whole. A wave is an integral part of an ocean, just as we are an integral part of the universe. Watts worked hard to eliminate the sense of separation that seems to be a part of our modern conditioning. Part of his genius was in putting it into words or concepts that could be understood by all.
Now, on to that pot of tea. Darjeeling or Assam? Perhaps sencha. I am very lucky to have such choices.
