I watched the recent EURO 2020 (really 2021) Final between England and Italy during an unusually long thunderstorm that hit the area I live early Monday morning, July 12th, 2021. I wanted to share this short video I made after the game. It shows some of the crazy weather we sometimes experience in Japan. This usually happens during the typhoon season in September, so this was an early and unwanted surprise.
We had so much rainfall that the local rivers were very close to flooding. Thankfully, they didn’t flood, but it was touch-and-go for a while. Usually, these kinds of storms pass through the area and move on. This storm wanted to stay! It started at around 3 am and ended just after 12 noon–a crazy 9 hours of thunder, lightning and heavy rain. Seeing the recent flooding in other parts of Japan, as well as Western Europe, you have to wonder how “natural” this weather is?
How is it in your part of the world? Any crazy weather hit recently?
Thanks for reading!
-Wakizashi, *delighted to have been in the sea this morning; the first dip of the summer!*
Here are a few photos I took this morning.
The South of the Netherlands had major flooding problems. Not on the scale of Germany and Belgium, but many people lost their houses. It is all over the news these last days. Really big. Our prime minister finally managed to reluctantly squeeze the words climate change out of his populist mouth, so that’s a win at least.

It’s been crazy recently. All good where you are?

Yes, I live in a different part of the country. We do notice that the summers have gotten hotter and dryer, which is a problem for the dykes and ground water levels.

Yeah, the summers are hotter here too. It gets a bit uncomfortable sleeping at night π

9hrs of torrential rain? Ughh!
Nice pictures. looking at that last one, is that concrete blocks leading down to the water? Like a boat launch or something?

Thanks π Yes, but I haven’t seen boats there. Maybe in the past they used it for launching boats.

Houses flooded away in a distant part of Germany. More than 150 dead people.
Gladly, the weather at my home is far better.
I watched the Euro finale, and just hated the behavior of English fans. Incidentally, I just read why the English arenβt loved: https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/english-abroad-cmd/index.html

Glad to hear you weren’t affected by the floods.
Yeah, there is a small number of England football fans who just don’t know how to human. π

We had an unusually cold and wet June, and cold May. July’s looking all right, though.

Oh, that’s right, it’s winter where you are, isn’t it? It was 34 degrees C (94F) today. Hot and sticky here π‘π

Wow, that’s a long storm, for sure. Glad it didn’t get too much worse. Things have been ok here (eastern US) recently. We’re in the typical hot and humid summer period. We had a few stretches that were hotter than usual, though nowhere near as hot as some of the western parts of the country. And we sometimes get strong storms through here, but again, nothing too bad recently, meaning nothing that had me concerned for my roof. π I love the photos. Looks like a very beautiful area and a great time of year with the sky, as you mentioned.

Thanks Todd π Hot and humid here, too. I love the deep blue summer sky, especially when contrasted with those wispy white clouds.
