Red Letter Media’s KENOBI Review

Have you watched any of the YouTube Channel Red Letter Media‘s film or TV reviews? They became famous for their 2009 70-minute video review of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. It was released in seven 10-minute parts and Part 1 is still their most-viewed video with over 10 million views. The video review is presented by the character Mr. Plinkett and the criticism is satirical and humorous. It upset a lot of Star Wars Prequel fans because of its tone and approach.

Red Letter Media Re:View KENOBI Ep. 1 to 4

Last weekend I did a Livestream talking about Red Letter Media’s Obi-Wan Kenobi TV Show Review. Their mostly positive reaction and comments about the show were quite surprising, as I’d expected them to rip it apart. Mike and Rich were mainly positive about it with Jay being the most critical. I wasn’t sure if they were being serious or not. They offered comments like “I feel guilty for enjoying it,” “It’s super okay,” and “It looks cheap and the writing isn’t great yet I’m having fun watching it.” Maybe they were going for the “so bad it’s good” approach? Or perhaps they just wanted to get a quick review recorded and uploaded? It’s possible their recent experiences watching the PICARD show have broken them, as they are much more into Star Trek than Star Wars. Their Picard reviews are very funny, by the way. I recommend them if you need a good laugh.

By the way, I have been enjoying parts of the series. There’s some good things in it but this is NOT Boba Fett. And that “racing” scene was more Spy Kids than Star Wars. Give me a good pod race instead!

Albums of Influence #1: Star Wars – Original Soundtrack (1977) by John Williams

As a way of getting into writing again, I’m going to post 10 albums that have had a big influence on me throughout my life. This is currently popular on facebook. One of the rules on facebook is “no explanations.” So I thought I would bring the explanations over here and share a little on why I have made each selection.

Star Wars – Original Soundtrack (1977) by John Williams

I can’t remember clearly if the first time I watched Star Wars (1977) was on TV or on my friend’s pirate video copy. This would be in either 1981 or 1982. We went through a phase of watching it every weekend at his house. So much so that I can still quote most of the dialog from the movie all these years later. The same friend also had a copy of the soundtrack on double vinyl and we used to listen to it at his house after school.

After reviewing Timothy Zahn’s Heir to the Empire at the end of October, I was left hungry for more. I quickly followed it with the next book in the Thrawn Trilogy, Dark Force Rising. It’s taken me a while to get this review up and out there, but here it is. This could be the review you are looking for…

My Thoughts
Is this the book you’re looking for? Well, I guess that depends on what you are seeking. It’s Star Wars, not high literature. In other words, you pretty much know what you are going to get. Does it succeed as a Star Wars novel? Yes, very much so. Like its predecessor, Heir to the Empire, it’s entertaining space fantasy. What really makes it work for me is the characters. Spending time with Luke, Leia, Han and Lando as they continue their adventures in a galaxy far, far away is rewarding as well as fun. I’m happy to admit that I’ve become invested in the new characters, particularly Mara Jade and the villainous Thrawn. I wonder how their narratives will unfold. Bring on the final book in the trilogy, The Last Command.

Heir to the Empire (1991) by Timothy Zahn

I used to be a Star Wars fan. I was only four years old in 1977 when Star Wars was released. I didn’t see it in a movie theatre unfortunately, but I can quote it line for line. I missed out on seeing The Empire Strikes Back at the theatre, too. I watched it every time it was on TV before the advent of VHS, and then wore out my taped-off-the-TV copy when my family finally bought a VCR. Third time lucky, I did see Return of the Jedi at the flicks and because of this it will always have a special place in my heart, ewoks and all! I still love the original trilogy but I’d rather have the original theatrical releases on Blu-ray than those so-called Special Editions. Why did you have to tamper with them, George?.. Anyway, onto the book.
